On the sidelines of the meetings preparing for the 31st AU summit on 1 and 2 July in Nouakchott, a high-level meeting on the G-5 Sahel was held today under the chairmanship of the Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and in the presence of the Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, representing the G-5 Sahel countries, President Pierre Buyoya, AU High Representative for Mali and the Sahel, Ibrahim Thiaw , UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for the Sahel and Ben Chambas, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Several members of the Mauritanian Government also attended the meeting which focused on the United Nations support plan for shared prosperity and lasting peace in the Sahel countries by implementing priorities to achieve the goals of sustainable development in accordance with the 2063 Agenda of the African Union.

Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs said, in the opening speech, they believed that there are good objective reasons to look at the Sahel region with greater optimism and away from the negative vision.
